Setting Up A Rule For Filtering Spam in Outlook 2003

Messages identified as spam are modified to begin the message subject with **Spam**. By adding the following rule to Outlook, these messages will be moved out of the inbox into a jumk mail folder. We recommended that you check the junk folder routinely in order to make sure that mail you actually want isn't being filtered.

Open Outlook

Select Tools > Rules and Alerts

Click on the New Rule button. This will bring up the Rules Wizard box

Select the "Start from a blank rule" button. In the "Step 1: Select when messages should be checked" box, select Check messages when they arrive. Click Next.

In the "Which condition(s) do you want to check?" box, scroll down until you see with specific words in the subject. Check the box to the left of with specific words in the subject.

In the "Edit the Rule Description (click an underlined value)" box below, click on specific words.
This will open the Search Text Box.

Under "Specify words or phrases to search for in the subject" window, type **Spam**

Click the Add button. Verify that the box looks like the image below. Click Ok to return to the Rules Wizard box.

Click Next at the botom of the Rules Wizard box. Under "What do you want to do with the message?" Check the box next to "move it to the specified folder". At the bottom of the box under "Edit the Rule Description(click an underlined value)" click on "specified".

Highlight "Junk E-mail" and click Ok. If you don't have a Junk E-mail folder click the New button and type Junk E-mail in the box and click Ok.

Your screen should now look like the image below:

Click Next. This will take you to the "Are there any exceptions?" box. Click Next.

Specify a name for this filter. It does not matter what you call it—this is just so you can tell it apart from other filters you may create. Your screen should now look like the image below:

Make certain that the box to the left of "Turn on this rule" is checked. Click Finish. Click OK.

Mail Test

Enter your email address in the box below and click the Send Test button.

A test message with a message marked as "**SPAM**" will be sent to you immediately. Make sure the message appears in your Junk E-mail folder.
